Working Group On Gender

A regional workshop on Gender Responsive Monitoring was conducted in Davao, Philippines last 5-11 March 2000. A total of 21 participants from six countries in Southeast Asia (SEA) took part in that trailblazing workshop conducted by two Filipino women experts.

The English documentation of the workshop will be published. Now, it is still with the press, but is expected to be ready for distribution by the first week of October. You can ask your copy from the TDH regional coordination office.
Another Gender Responsive Monitoring workshop is being organized by the Thailand Partners’ Gender Group. The plan is to hold it in Chiangrai, Thailand on 16-19 October 2000 for TDH partners from the mainland SEA.

Resource persons and trainers will come from the Philippines and Thailand.
The members of the Regional Working Group (RWG) on Gender, in a meeting last 11 March 2000 in Davao, have agreed to pursue a regional plan of action. Key features of the plan:

  • A regional campaign will be launched through the Internet and a mobilization campaign will be regionally orchestrated from Nov 25-Dec 10, 2000, with each country building on the theme of globalization and ill effects on women such as sex trafficking, food security, job security, etc. Each participating country in SEA is enjoined to banner the issue of military repression in Aceh and Burma.
  • Make a directory of TdH partners focused on or working with women, other women networks nationally, regionally and internationally who can be contacted for joint action and campaigns.
  • Make an inventory of existing materials on Gender in the region, and to share with each other valuable and relevant Gender materials in English (those in the local language can be translated into English if found useful).
  • Present to Partners Meetings in SEA countries the results of the Gender Monitoring Workshop and with them identify minimum standards of gender sensitive projects.
  • The members agreed to fully support the TDH international campaign on Sex Trafficking, and propose to include one representative of the SEA Regional Working Group in the Global Committee.
  • Ms Lyda Canson of the Philippines is the convener of this RWG. Each country has chosen a focal person. For more information ask the regional coordination office.
