PRESS RELEASE STATEMENT FOR CHILDREN’S MONTH CELEBRATION

Children bear the brunt of Biodiversity destruction

The global destruction in our environment has become one of the most extensive issues affecting children today.  

Biodiversity, or the variety of life on earth (sum of all the different species of animals, plants, fungi, and microbial organisms living on Earth and the variety of habitats in which they live), is constantly threatened by ecological issues upsetting both the physical environment and humans.

International day of Action Against Dams, March 14 event in Karen Villages near Wei Gyi dam and Hat Gyi dam construction sites:
March 16, 2008

"Amongst local communities children will be the most affected group"

On March 14, the  International day of Action
Against dams, Karen villagers from 23 Salween river communities gathered together and called for the withdrawal of the proposed dams on Salween River .

There were more than 200 children out of the total number of 480 people who joined the event and called for the dam investors not to continue their plan to build dams along the Salween River, saying it will permanently destroy their home lands.
